I spent some years in the service industry, so I know that people are very quick to complain about poor service, but its equally rare to hear compliments when things have gone well. This is very much the case in the commercial aviation industry also... So anyway, my son had to fly as an unaccompanied minor from Auckland to Perth on New Year's Eve, via Sydney. He was pretty nervous, it was the first time he'd ever travelled on his own, and to be honest I was pretty concerned how he would handle getting from International to Domestic at Sydney, as well as collecting his luggage and getting thru customs to catch his connecting flight (in 2 hours). Oh yeah, he was also travelling on QANTAS (who I have been quick to slag off previously I'd admit). Well there was absolutely NO cause for concern at all. The flight attendants looked after him the whole way, and made sure he was able to get thru the interchange at Sydney then made sure I was the correct person picking him up at Perth. They did EXACTLY as they said they would. So big ups to QANTAS for their levels of service there! The only hiccup was at the Air NZ controlled waiting room in Auckland (where they put the kids) and they forgot to tell him the flight was already boarding! He had to poke his head out the door to ask if it was time to board... That couldve been interesting!

I flew unaccompanied from Nadi to Auckland when I was 12 years old and the Air NZ Cabin Crew were totally welcoming and professional throughout. I remember being scared initially but the air hostesses were so kind and friendly it didn't last long. The highlight was being invited into the flight deck to meet the Captain and FO (aircraft was a 737-200 I think), and when they both turned around to say hello at the same time I wondered who was flying the plane!

I have seen on several occasions the Air New Zealand cabin crew looking after the unaccompanied minors, and they always seem to do a great job. I'm sure it must be quite rewarding for them to see passengers who are full of wonder about flight, rather than completely blasé like so many of the adult patrons these days.

Not sure if this is still happening these days...

Good feedback thanks mate, just back from our family holiday to Enzed and experienced the great service of Air NZ on the way over ( new Dreamliner ZK-NZF) and returning via a couple of nights in Melbourne (Virgin 738 out of CHC) and finally Qantas from Melbourne go Perth on a newly upgraded A330 in One World livery. Without doubt the 787-9 was the most comfortable with great seat pitch in economy! Funny you added the above clip from the classic movie 'Airplane' as I downloaded it off iTunes onto the iPad just before we left for the boys. I ended up watching it on the flight out of CHC (what a blast from the past!) and one of the cabin staff recognised it at meal time and commented to her much younger colleague how it was a favourite of hers and that she just had to see it BTW what is the cutoff age for an unaccompanied minor, is it 16?
