Oto Merla just showcased new palletised 20mm Vulcan gun for Close Air Support (CAS). Developed for the C-27 platform for the Italian Army, the unit is self contained so can be used on any airlifter with a parachute door (no external modifications anticipated). www.janes.com/article/51228/idef-2015-oto-melara-reveals-c-27j-gunship-systemGot me wondering does the NZDF field any CAS capability for the Army? If these units are only a couple of million dollars per unit, seems a pretty economical way to add an offensive capability to our airlift assets. Assuming we eventually do decide to get dedicated strategic airlift to relieve our venerable C130s of some of their workload, then perhaps the C130s and their future replacement can add this role to the many they already play (troop transport, logistics, and medic evac). Then again maybe we dont want to put them in harms way and NZDF strategy is for RNZAF to eventually fly drones in that capacity....

Now Lockheed is offering a palletised mission package for its C-130Js as cost-effective solution to UK MMA [maritime multimission aircraft] requirement. "The P-8 is a fine aircraft, but the C-130 [upgrade] offers an innovative way to use already existing platforms for a completely new mission, and it means that you can use the infrastructure that you already have also," he said. www.janes.com/article/52394/paris-air-show-2015-lockheed-martin-says-maritime-c-130-offering-for-uk-has-international-potentialIf we did replace our C130-Hs with C-130Js, hope someone has the foresight to also consider the Lockheed and Oto Merla pallets as mission modules to accompany the purchase. Then we can rename our C-130s as TB-2s!
