Something I have mentioned on this forum before, but most metal flying boats throughout history have relied on a good thick coat of lanolin (sheep's wool grease) on all surfaces normally exposed to sea water to maintain a barrier between the dissolved salts and the aluminium alloy. The British Commonwealth air forces specified lanolin for this important task, and I have little doubt that practically all operators of metal flying boast throughout the world were of like mind. Perhaps a synthetic version of lanolin was later developed - can any board member add anything to this? David D
