This reminds me... tvnz.co.nz/national-news/exclusive-police-told-not-ticket-unlicenced-maori-drivers-in-south-auckland-6339517Of this However this is just the type of dumbass thinking that has lead to all sorts of unintended consequences in various parts of the world, it's mostly implemented by those hand wringing, in pain from eating too much tofu or bean sprouts, university educated and rushed through the ranks career politicians and police officers. All you need to look at is the shitstorm that is happening with the Jewish and Sharia pseudo courts that are endorsed by the raving left in the UK. This is a SERIOUS mistake, the MOMENT you introduce a state sanctioned two tier justice system is the moment that any support for justice, natural or otherwise is lost. Maori, Chinese, African, Lebanese, etc etc even white folk....if you break the law of the land through wilful ignorance or disobedience you should be treated equally in the eyes of the law. What a crock this is, and the Maori cop had the temerity to say this isn't about race? So why identify and place in official guidelines the word Maori? Is Maori a state of mind perhaps...rather than a race? "Oh sorry officer cuz, I don't have a license aye! But it's cos my mind is Maori" Good grief, what's happened to good old kiwi common sense.

I thought this was some strange joke when I saw the Herald reporting this earlier. Really unbelievable.

Surely treating someone differently based on their race must be illegal ? If the police can do it , why cant everybody ( such as employers ) ? In my opinion this is a very poor look for the police policy makers . Imagine the uproar that would occour if , instead of letting off unlicenced Maori drivers , they increased the fines just for this group . ( their justification appears to be that the levels of offending are much higher for maori - so why not target the law breakers instead of letting them off ) ?

Sums up the whole PC BS pathway this country is degrading down. I thought the reporter made a good point "how do officers decide who is Maori" Will the policy be acted on purely based on the offenders skin colour or do we need to introduce a Maori ID card and if so how do I get one?

It should be a policy across the board, regardless of race. Alternatively go back to the same rule, which is a fine. If they want to get Maori reducing crime get them to be law abiding like everyone else. Instead you give them attention for the 'wrong' behaviour, instead of reinforcing what people are doing right. that's why a fine is the response, it makes it punishing to do or keep doing the wrong thing. Too much PC handling just makes the whole system a joke, to those who don't comply with the law, don't pay their way yet cause the most harm on our roads, and cost to society.

Careful now boyos..we're sliding down that slippery slope of redneck talkback radio..."I'm not racist but..."
As absurd as it sounds I suspect that the NZ media has not fully researched the story and is as usual relying on shock journalism to sell papers...

Why is it "racist" to expect all races to be treated equally by the legal system.

With respect, that's bovine manure sir. You cannot have a two tier system of law enforcement based apon racial profiling, if you allow the numpties leeway on this, what's next? More stringent eye exams for Asians who are involved in accidents? Or perhaps mandatory diabetes tests for Pacific Islanders before they can get a license? It's a slippery slope and it plays exactly to the narrative of the redneck/vocal minority.....which is why it is a stupid, ill conceived and ultimately racially divisive piece of public policy based on wooly thinking and daft logic. It says in essence Maori get a free pass because they are different, different how?

The cop who was on TV defending the policy didnt sound like he was trying the sell papers . I see they have back tracked a bit today on this , suggesting that it might not now only apply to those with the right skin colour ( but this is only after the public back lash )

I am sure much more will be coming out about this. There is just too much in the 'grey' area that makes it unworkable. How do you define who is qualified, am I Maori, what if I claim to be on the roadside. Do I need to front to the Police Station the next day ? Is it on their database already ? On the electoral roll, what of a 17 year old, or someone not enrolled ? Is their a line across the road where one side may qualify for compliance and on the other you are in for an almighty argument, ie jurisdiction ?
I saw an interview with a policeman when he essentially stated there was such a policy. I wonder how far up the chain such knowledge extends though. Did the Commissioner know, the Police Minister, the Prime Minister, for that matter any of the opposition ?
Surely an unlicensed driver can't be insured. Are they permitted to drive after being pulled over and ticketed, but with compliance ?
What then if they have an accident or even worse cause serious injury ? At the moment the unlicensed driver is basically accepting all risk themselves, this scheme is just going to draw more unwilling participants in.
Somehow I have a feeling this 'scheme' may be only lasting a few more days in it's present form.

Yep, my bad....I do agree with your post, but I just hoped we wouldnt be dragged into the mire that is debate over race-based legislation, which is never-ending. I'm totally against these sorts of policies, and as a middle-aged, heterosexual, able bodied, tax-paying whitey Im probably the most disadvantaged of the lot!

On Monday I ventured north to Taumaruni to see the Auckland train set cars which are there for storage. I also attempted to find Cresco LTY but he finished before I could locate the strip west of the town.
The exciting bit was heading south on State Highway 4. At the intersection of the road to Kopaki, a Police Officer waiting at the Give Way for a northbound car to pass, turned on his flashing lights and did a right hand turn in front of me. I think he became aware of my car skidding towards him and perhaps the car behind me doing the same. The cop carried on north with his flashing lights and we were left a bit dumbfounded (well swearing).
If it had been the other way around, I would have been walking home.
So even when it's the open road and 103kph is a good speed, I was only doing only 93kph, I found that the car slowed down much quicker. I guess at 103kph, he would have T-boned me.
So it's not the people driving Juicy Cars, it's the Cops you have to watch out for as well.

Hmm, if you put in a complaint they would know which car was in that spot at that time. They might not admit it, but they'd know, especially if he was responding to a call.
