Hi guys, my mission may have beaten me...I'm trying to source (if possible) the 3-letter designation of a particular aircraft flown in WW2.
Here's what I've got: Dad flew Mosquito's on 608 & 162 Sqn (PFF) in '44 &'45. Now from his logbook I can see the one he flew the most was a Mark XXV, and has number of KB499. I'd love to see if theres any way of getting the lettering that it had, or else at last resort I'd just use his initials.
I've been googling like mad, but havent found anything yet...Any assistance gratefully accepted!
BTW, how did they come up with the lettering for those planes?

No. 608 (North Riding) Squadron used squadron codes PG, RAO, UL and 6T at different times. No. 162 Squadron used CR and KY This thread reports KB499 was with No. 162 Squadron as 'Q' blackbusheairport.proboards.com/thread/15/?page=3So it will have been either CR-Q or KY-Q. The squadron had the Mark XXV Mosquitoes from around Nov 1944 till July 1946 so you'll have to just find out which of the two squadron codes they used during that period. RAF Commands Forum will probably be your best help.

Jonesy, You can download the ORBs for these squadrons on a month by month basis from the UK National Archives website. There is a fee of 3 pounds 30 pence for each file download. Bear in mind, though, that for each month there is usually a Form 540 and a Form 541 - as two separate downloads. You could also post a request on the RAF Commands forum, as there may be a forumite there who has already obtained copies of some or all that is relevant to your search and be happy to share. The forum can be found at www.rafcommands.comCheers, Errol
