Flight Lieutenant Harold (Hal) Blampied DFC - 489 pilot and author of a privately published book called 'The Diary of a Beaufighter Pilot' passed away earlier this week just short of his 95 birthday. Hal was a fantastic person - humble and courageous and loved by all that met him. He was a member of an ever shrinking group of fantastic people who rose to a challenge few of us can even contemplate.
Hal will be remembered for his piano playing skills and his readiness to entertain all and sundry with a few songs. Hal's funeral will be held on Thursday 10th September at St Lukes Church 130 Remuera Road at 2 o'clock - I am sure his family will be arranging a good send off for a great man and I am sure there will be a lot of music. Turn up to salute him if you have a moment to spare.

Yes, sad to see one of the last No. 489 Squadron men pass away. I believe Hal had been quite ill for some while, hadn't he?
