Hey Don is there any info or details on what the repaint would have looked like? Might make an interesting "what if" build subject. Not that I have ever seen. Desert Pink seemed to be flavour of the month with the RAF but Sand Brown may have been more appropriate for the A-4. Whatever it was it would have had to be able to be sprayed on quick, so I doubt it would have been more than one colour.

5 Squadron were also preparing to be deployed at the time. When I arrived back in the hangar after being away on course, there was virtually nobody there, as they were all off doing war stuff (weapons training etc.) A few days later we got to work and heard via the media that 40 Sqn were being deployed instead! Makes you wonder how the politicians work!! So a whole new bunch of guys had to get prepared. When they went down to medical to get their jabs, they had none left as 5 Sqn had already had them all !!
As Don alluded to there were a lot of people who were not so excited about it all. Sure was a reality check for many.

The only thing on base Ohakea that got painted desert cammo was one of the golf carts and some people were seen marching around in desert dpm's.

I was chef at Woody when the 'fun' began. Even though mere Supply duties i did ponder the outside chance that, in the arcane wisdom of the Airy farce, some Supply would be req'd in some regard, for the festivities. It's mildly humourous now to hark back to those ingenuous days.
Interesting narrative on the Kahu upgrade. I brazenly visited 1RD one day, in civvies, to snap some pics of the airframe undergoing work. W/O 1RD popped over to 'enquire' of my activities. Yes, well, maybe I missed that bit, where you ask the boss first. Certainly explains his concern over someone with a camera.

Certainly the afternoon when the Scuds were mid air was a hold the breath minute , were they nuclear armed . And the best memory aside from the great ack ack show , was when a cruise missile went past the reporters hotel when he was air ... commenting it just turned right. I had been to Iraq a few times prior , getting used to the dark suit that went everywhere 10 yards behind. Was it better than the isis mess today , maybe , dictators are good at that.

The thing I recall most vividly was the remark by an American commentator that said something like "On 15 January 1991 Saddam had the fourth largest army in the world. A few days later he had the fourth largest army in Iraq. What made that possible was air power". Says it all, really.

Maybe Fiji receiving all those gifted Russian weapons today will make them start to wake up and realise we don't live in a benign strategic region!?

Just heard of the Russian arms shipment, perhaps we need to re establish a base in Fiji, I was surprised that it was the Russians, thought the Chinese would have been in first. isc

They look like they are in a race with each other to try and buy favours with various Pacific Island Countries.

We're a Pacific Island nation, maybe we should ask Russia for some free Sukhois and Migs?
