As many of the forum will no doubt be aware, the renowned NZ potter Barry Brickell died on 23 January 2016 at the age of 80. He is usually perceived as being a potter and railway enthusiast with little interest in aviation. However, I am advised that he actually has a connection with the NZ aircraft preservation scene in that he was instrumental in retrieving P-40E NZ3009 from Larsen's at Rukuhia when that operation was being closed down as a result of the expansion of Hamilton airport.
As hearsay and stories can frequently be incorrect, can anyone confirm this, and, if it is in fact true, perhaps provide more details?
Thanks.

I have not heard about him having any interest in aviation, nor any connection to NZ3009, but I do know others on this forum were there at MOTAT at the time when the P-40E was retrieved (after Charles Darby organised its acquisition for MOTAT). Someone here will know if Barry was involved, I'm sure.

First I have heard of that.
NZ3009 was intialled acquired by Darby & McGarry on behalf of the Auckland Branch of AHSNZ. When that fell over, they donated/loaned it to MoTAT.
But then I may just be ignorant.

Thank you gentlemen; it would seem that the story is a myth and can be discounted as a result. I would suggest that on that basis the matter can be considered closed. At least we (I) now know.
