"Many of the officers who failed had flown for Air NZ for decades and were decorated ex-Air Force pilots."
I suspect that it is highly unlikely that 'many' of the 10 who failed have been decorated.

Decorated with the highly coveted Defence Service Medal? Wouldn't be many airline pilots left with 'Actual' decorations eg. DFC in this country surely?

It's very difficult to get in to the airlines today..real people have been taken out of the hiring process and replaced with scaly noxious creatures known as HR..they come from places like Waikato university psychology department and are also fluent in Te reo and have studied feminist literature. They also possess a series of mathematical problems based on quantum dynamics and string theory which you must solve while simultaneously reciting the United Nations charter.
Of course they are well aware, no pilots flying today are really suitably qualified to do the job if they had been recruited prior to about 2005 when the HR creature was genetically created in the laboratory and took over the screening process. Thus they require methods of removing older pilots from positions in the company's they represent and replacing them with the clone type gender non specific malleable non threatening aviators that they describe as 'air new zealanders'
