Typical page from the Weekly News. The badge looks like one of the old gilt variety that abounded in the '50's and '60's. I had a different version on a reefer jacket way back when pontius was a pilot and wore short pants.

Thanks Camtech , and Suthg I did wonder about the Tyhoons , I wonder what they would have been like in the Solomons , probably a maintenance nightmare !

They would not have beaten the Corsairs as dive bombers I don't think. The coral dust would have been harsh on their delicate engines I guess. Plus being British they probably won't have been too good in the heat.

Agreed on both counts Dave. The Corsairs were strong stable planes. Both could do 550mph IAS in dives.

Stylised aircraft, sometimes drawn from aircraft recognition photos featured often in "Contact" and associated publications. Quite a few examples can be found where RNZAF markings have been superimposed over the originals to illustrate a Kiwi aircraft. Some still exist in the Leo White collection.
