Isn't there a Titan Mustang based there?

Yes I believe so, and there are also at least one based at Hamilton and several in Tauranga.

Blimmin' terrible news. Many pilots around the Waikato have benefited from this pilot's knowledge and experience. He will be sadly missed by the aviation community in these parts. :-(

It feels wrong to like what Evan said, but I could not have put it better. Still in shock. RIP

I agree with Evan, We've lost one of the good blokes always encouraging, especially for a lot of the younger pilots around the Waikato. I got to know him quite well when working my way through the issues that delayed the Adventurer's first flight.

That is sad. Surprised it was fatal as it looks like an intact aircraft.

The news sites are starting to print speculation about what might, or might not, have happened. Let's all watch what we post pretty carefully so as to not fuel any particular media fires. As the aviation community, we are 100% supportive of finding the facts and taking what safety lessons we can from incidents like this. However, the facts are not going to be clear for some time. I urge caution and discretion in public forums until the investigation is complete.

John's funeral was held on Saturday with a crowd of hundreds for a great send off of a widely respected aviator. Quite by coincidence the two seat Spitfire flew in from Ardmore to do some training circuits. I think John would have liked to have known his eulogy was punctuated by the sound of a Merlin at full power (even though he was a P-51 fan through and through ). Vale, John. Superius volitant.

Is this the John Shuttleworth who flew gliders at Masterton in the 1970s? If so I used to tow him aloft behind Piper PA18/150 ZK-BNP
