A “Letter to the Editor” published in today's Dominion Post newspaper (including exact spelling used).... Redundant RunwaysI can't see the logic in extending Wellington Airport runaway when commonsense alternatives have been available for many years. Many militaries around the world have planes that tip their jet engines downward and accordingly lift the plane off the ground. By gradually moving the engine from downward to backward pointing, the plane moves foward and increases speed. It works for the military, so why is it not used in the real world? A runaway about the size of a rugby field would be all that's needed. Then we can go back to the old fashioned aircraft carriers. A powerful wire spring enables the planes to take off without having to increase speed in the normal manner and distance. While landing, a hook at the planes rear locks on to the same wire spring that slows the plane down in a very short distance. If we couple the above methods with the increasing technology inevitable in our computerised world, traditional airport runaways will be redundant and could be used to grow legal marijuana. Think of the tax take generated by creative thinking? LAURIE BENNETT Upper Hutt

And perhaps in its down time it could be used to launch bales of the crop across Cook Strait and make the Inter Islander redundant.

Go Laurie - you rock!
THOMARSE is correct - Laurie is a 71 year old guy who just loves to stir, and if you look at some of his other letters to newspapers (tumbleweeds in Upper Hutt, anyone?) then you may appreciate his wonderful sense of humour and mischief.

The California Sreamin' roller coaster at Disneyland California Adventure is launched horizontally and up the first hill using a linear induction motor. It was pretty cool. I think the US Navy are adopting the same tech on their new carriers.
