Cost of Aircraft recrational & GA

A big stumbling Block to young Aviators is the cost of a flying Machine....

Engine wise the Rotax has become the Pratt & Whitney of the recreational scene with multiple new types coming out all the time of other engines. Jabiru is another great engine (IF YOU INSTALL AND MAINTAIN THEM PROPERLY- MOST WEREN'T OR AREN'T) we have 2 here just passed 700 hours no issues.

Just been looking at planes for sale and some good buys out there at present. So you don't have to have that $200.000 dollar beast as there some really good buys at the Mo under $50K and way less than that.

If you are after a single place machine there is a really nice Taylor Mono (Microlite) for sale in Hawera. VW powered starts every time it's immaculate and all for $12K and there are good buys round the country like this.

So go buy yaself a flying machine then I just got one for $10K a 2 seater very nice.....

The price you buy it for is just the down-payment.

I have looked at buying at various times over the years.
Unfortunately, a large part of the ownership costs are not use related - insurance, hangarage and so on.
(I see hangar space for a GA single at Ardmore advertised at $100 per week!)

But my reckoning in order to get your hourly rate in a GA single down to a reasonable figure, you need 100hrs per year utilization.
That's two hours per week.
Knock out half of the weekends each year for weather, home duties, laziness etc, and that's four hours every second weekend.

Not many hobby fliers would clock that up on a regular basis.

Of course, the overhead costs would drop if you have your farm strip.

Boating fanatics reckon that it costs 10% to 20% of the purchase price to maintain your boat each year. i reckon an aircraft would be at least that.

Yeah no what ya saying am lucky here Hangarage $1.25 a day club $100 (and as much Grass as ya can eat) a year so not to bad.

I am going down the recreational Route so costs alround shouldn't be to bad mind you I don't care how much it costs as long as I can do it for now one day I wont be able to. But then will go do something else to do have plenty other hobbies to be going on with.

Mate has a plane fully aerobatic does 145knots on 80hp 12 litres and hour (Bastard)
