My main means of transport is my bicycle, I wear a fluro vest if I'm out of town , on the main roads, but I'm not too enthused about compulsory fluro. I did start wearing a skid lid 4 or 5 years before they became compulsory. but if I fall off , no jacket will help, if I had a kilowatt of flashing lights, half the drivers still would not see anything. Same on the apron, if some clot is going to walk into a plane, he'll do it what ever he's wearing. isc

Trouble is now that AAC have gone down this path, it kind of sets a precedent. How many other AC's will feel obliged to follow suit? How soon before we all are required to don the pretty floro vests? Canterbury Aero Club has been doing the fluro for about 18 months now. Might have been an Christchurch Airport company thing thou. Not to onerous, plenty of vests around, and quite frankly, you are more visible. Perhaps Auckland copied?

At Te Kowhai they have started building a new hangar block and the contractors were working today. They had erected the mandatory Health and safety hazard warning sign - right in the middle of the taxiway from my hangar! (they had also parked a variety of diggers etc close to the edge of the taxiway). Credit to the Airfield manager Paul for rapidly responding to my admittedly grumpy phone call and sorting things out. It appears as though earthmoving contractors havent realised aeroplanes have wings!

Before the quakes my boys would go nuts over a digger or crane and could watch them for hours. Now I point them out and they are blind and totally uninterested in them.

Over heard a couple of older blokes down at South City Mall about three years ago, saying twenty years ago I liked watching the cranes putting the buildings up, now they are back again pulling the B****y things down. isc

Well if you believe Radio NZ so far H&S is a complete failure. Safety law fails to curb workplace death rate - www.radionz.co.nz/news/national/318693/safety-law-fails-to-curb-workplace-death-rateThe classic one in the UK where H&S uptake is not across the board on every airfield - "Safety Officer" approach's and asks why you are not wearing "High Viz" - You ask - "How could you tell?" "I can see you" he says. And your point is? High Viz is also a water waster - ? Mens loo at Exeter airport where there is a row of hand basins with automatic taps - the reflective tape on the HV jacket triggers every one of them as you walk past. How many times a day does that happen? H&S Rules. Rule 1. Don't be stupid. Rule 2. See Rule 1.
