According to the New Zealand Historic Aircraft Trust's Facebook page the de Havilland Devon NZ1808 is to be flown again today after a long time on the ground. Fantastic. Does anyone know how it went? Has it happened yet? Here's a photo from their page Source: Here

Good news, Peter Mole says it "Took to the air at 2.25 for 25 mins". Congrats to all involved.

Very nice to see "KaTTie" flying again. Well done. I have been fortunate enough to enjoy quite a few flights on board her. Even better had a few turns in the right hand seat. Lovely plane to fly.

Why was she out of the air? Maintenance? She was one of the fleet sold in the 80s not one of the Woodborne Instructional airframes? She looks really good!

So with this one and Mit Brereton's NZ1805, are there any others still airworthy at the moment in New Zealand?

I presume you are referring to the four with ZK-U*O registrations which all came onto the civil register on 17 October 1977. Their fates as far as I am aware: ZK-UCO ex NZ1812: This is dismantled and stored at Classic Flyers Museum. It had been retrieved from Drury in a very poor state; ZK-UDO ex NZ1821: This was written off at Ohakea on 3 February 2006; ZK-UEO ex NZ1826: This appears to have been parted out (Whangarei?). The wings were suspended from the ceiling at McDonalds in the International terminal at Auckland but reported as being sent to Australia and scrapped in Queensland; ZK-UFO ex NZ1802; This is displayed suspended in the main hangar at Classic Flyers. The left wing has been removed from the main structure and is mounted separately on another wall. The purpose being to retain the main structure in a limited space. None the less it looks very effective.

UCO now sits outside ,quite a surprise to me when I passed CFM a few days ago.. RNG/NZ1807 is still at Wanaka. A bit of cash and she'd be airworthy . A great people mover when we had two of them at Warbirds during the 1990's . Ardmore even had 3 on the airfield for a time when KTT ,UDO and RNG. Spoilt for choice then..

Subsequent to ZK-UDO ex NZ1821's accident at Ohakea, all useable parts were removed and the hulk was to go to scrap. The battered cockpit section was then saved, dry stored, and is now more than 70% tidied up. Due to the damage sustained, it will never be 100% original but at least it now has a nose!
The aim is to return it to a 1960s RNZAF fitout, painted in a unique scheme only worn by NZ1821. Photos of the paint scheme can be found on this form
Ninety percent or more of the internals have been collected, with a new canopy being the major missing item. Any leads on a canopy would be most welcome!
Many thanks to Scrooge and others for the fantastic support of this project.

Jaybee, lovely to see this old bird back in the air! I remember going for a flight in her in the 80's at a Wanaka Airshow.
Now, canopies. I seem to recall hearing of some Devon canopies somewhere but for the life of me I just cant remember where (I know that is not much help). I seem to recall ex RNZAF stock?? Perhaps post on Key Publishing Forum, I have managed to locate a few tricky to find bits for my own T.7 rebuild through there.
Get the word out and someone will know.
Cheers Anthony

Hi Anthony. Unfortunately NZ 1821 is now just a cockpit section and will never see the air again. The cockpit is being mounted on a trailer and I had hoped to get it to the Air Tattoo, but it won't be ready.
Thanks for the Key forum suggestion. I had thought about that but shipping a canopy from the UK won't be cheap, hence hoping to find something here or in Australia.
By the way, great work on the Auster rebuild. I have been interested to follow its progress over the years. Cheers

Thanks very much!
If you do locate one in the UK, let me know as I know someone who brings a container over once a year from the UK. He is happy to bring plane bits back (he owns a Cub) from time to time. Let me know and if needed and we can arrange something.
Cheers Anthony

Many a student pilot found loitering around the clubhouse were dispatched out to the airframe, toolbox in hand, by the legendary CFI, R. "Whimpy" Baker, with the words ringing their ears "Get out there and do something bloody useful for change!"..... The fuselage was to be mounted on a trailer and be used for promotional purposes (flight training/Executive Air Taxis) but I don't remember this being completed.

To my knowledge KTT last flew 2010. It had been relocated to Tauranga late 2007/ early 08. And flew quite regulary and I was quite fortunate to have a flew flights with Barry Kaey as pilot. The lack of airworthiness/ maintanence was due lack of knowledge with the particular aircraft in the Tauranga area which has taken sometime to get up to speed with. However still great to see her back flying again well done all
