Some awful news that really upset me today: Eugene Cernan, USN Captain and commander of the last manned Moon mission, died today. He was 82. NASA has a great collection of info and statements about Gene here: www.nasa.gov/astronautprofiles/cernanA fantastic documentary about him called The Last Man On the Moon is out - I watched on Netflix - and gives a great insight into the man as well as his flying and space careers. Now both the first and last have left us, when will we go back?? Of the Apollo missions which landed on the moon, only the crew of Apollo 16 now survives in its entirety.

Watched that, it was real good.
Sadly, time's catching up with these guys; I shiver to think who'll be next. There are still some great names alive; my favourite is John Young - what a guy and what a career - Gemini 3 and 10 (ham sandwich debacle), Apollo 16 and STS1 Columbia. The only astronaut to serve as a commander on Gemini, Apollo and Space Shuttle flights. I met him many years ago in Scotland.
God speed, Gene.

John Young is one who I'd love to see a movie about. His book is on my must-buy list. Thanks to Into The Black I've become very interested in him.
Cernan was an FJ-4 and A-4 pilot in the US Navy. A great career. One poster at another forum called him the most eloquent of the Apollo astronauts.
