Warbirds ready to roar over Auckland
By TAMMY BUCKLEY - Papakura Courier | Wednesday, 29 August 2007
Warbirds stored at Ard-more Airport will soon be stretching their wings again as they take flight for a commemorative flypast over the Auckland War Memorial Muesum cenotaph.
The flypast will acknowledge the anniversary of the final stages of the Battle of Britain and is held every year on the first Sunday after September 15.
"It's a memorial to the pilots from the Battle of Britain and to all pilots really," says New Zealand Warbirds Association vice-president Peter Houghton.
The battle, which is considered one of World War Two?s pivotal clashes, began in August 1940.
It raged above southern England for weeks as outnumbered British pilots desperately defended the region from Nazi raids on airfields, cities and towns.
The battle ended after the British launched raids on ports along northern Europe's coast.
Mr Houghton says about 30 planes are expected to take part in the flypast including a Tiger Moth, P-51 Mustang, Nak and a Nanchang.
The Warbirds' DC-3 and Catalina are not expected to take part because they are away fufilling other duties.
The planes will take off from Ardmore from 10.30am on September 16 and will fly out over Brookby and Whitford.
Once they reach the area between Musick Pt and Rangitoto Island they will hold until 11.10am when they will fly in sucession over the cenotaph.
They will continue flying south of the SkyTower and over Motat before returning to Ardmore by 11.30am.
This year the association will not be holding an open day.
Mr Houghton says while it was successful last year the decision has been made not to hold it this year.
"We'll leave it for a year and come back again next year."
