A bit of chatter on the 'UK Airshow Review' (UKAR) board Here that recommends 'Flickr' as a good alternative to PB. Dave have you considered Flickr..? (link)

I'm a member of another bulletin board and have thousands of images there, mostly of TEAL flight covers.
All hosted in a free PB account, all gone..
That board has set up a forum where members can edit posts. Photo-heavy threads with valuable info are slowly being fixed by members editing out their old PB images with new Imgur ones.
It's pretty straightforward to download your PB images and thdn upload to a new host.
And you can rescue departed members images. If you right click you can open the PB link. Sure, you'll see the dreaded dial but refresh (Ctrl-F5) and the photo appears. You can then save it.

All my images posted to numerous groups which are hosted by the free account at Photobucket got replaced by that dreaded dial earlier today, but over the past hour, all of the images have reappeared on those threads again. I even refreshed the pages I was looking at to make sure the images weren't coming from my computer's cache, but they still reappeared as fresh downloads. Weird.

Sorry to hear that Gavin, I hope the Duxford trip is making up for this very annoying thing.

So do yet have a preferred alternative?

So if I understand this thing correctly PB will allow 3rd party embedding of pictures if you have a paid account somewhere in the vicinity of $400 per annum. Yeah?
Question: What would a dedicated on-line cache (ie like PB) for WONZ members to store images on cost annually? Or a private WONZ website with sufficient bandwidth/storage capacity to post images to directly? Would 100 members @ $50 per annum = $5,000 be sufficient?
From where I sit the issue is how valuable is this resource to each of us individually? Kinda like Rukuhia, who's got foresight and is prepared to put money into the preservation of it?
I will. Over to the rest of you.

That's US$400 John, so NZ$549 in real money. per account (I have four).
A server space can be purchased, yes, but with the ability for everyone to upload photos to it? I don't know how you'd go about that. And it would mean a subscription fee to the forum, which would mean an utter nightmare to enforce and set up. Suggestions are welcome though.

I know that it's not how we might like it Dave, but significant changes out of our control require adaption. I agree, any ideas or suggestions need to be put on the table.

I'm not really meaning whether people like it or not, I am talking about practicality. I am not sure there is any easy way to come up with one sweeping solution.

Sad to see the high number of missing photos in the various threads. I hope some of them can be recovered and hosted elsewhere. Other forums I've browsed have also been affected.

I am planning to recover photos I have posted on an as and when basis, when I look up an old thread or someone else does that has photos I've posted that are missing, I'll do my best to re-post them so they are back again. I did that today when I looked up an older thread on Hawker Tomtits. It's a right pain in the jacksie and takes a while to find the photos, but I think over time it will be worthwhile.

I've decided the best description for Photobucket in its present form is 'ransom-ware'
