Nice. That whole Devonport area looks tiny from the air doesn't it. I never realised the harbour whips round behind it like that, it's almost an island.

Nice. That whole Devonport area looks tiny from the air doesn't it. I never realised the harbour whips round behind it like that, it's almost an island. For some reason I always had this mental image of Rangitoto being a long slender island in my pre-Auckland days (because of what it looks like from the shore I guess). Then, about 20 years ago, I flew over it in a 172 and realised it was more like a cow pat. ;D Devonport can seem even more like an island when there's heavy traffic and you're trying to get out on the 1 road in and out. Cheers, Stu.

Some more from the distant, pre-digital archives. Sorry about the quality of the scans, some are a bit grainy and the rest are rubbish. Concorde at Christchurch. Didn't manage to get the camera out in time as we taxied right past it in a 737 so the next view I got was from a couple of thousand feet above. The good old pre-9/11 days. Flying to Sydney in 1998 to interview the Smashing Pumpkins (yawn) and got to spend the last hour of the flight in the jumpseat of a 747 (highlight of the whole trip). Thanks Air NZ. Over Sydney. Battle of Britain 60th anniversary fly-over, 2000. From the back seat of Harvard 65. More from BoB 2000 Forming up over the harbour for the massed flyover of the cenotaph. Sunderland under restoration at Motat some time in the mid-90s Cockpit of the aforementioned Sunderland. The Lancaster. Cheers, Stu.

Some nice photos Stu. The Sunderland flight deck looks a bit shabby, has it since been refurbished? The Harvards are always great scenes. The Concorde at Christchurch looks cool, was that in 1986 or 1989? The '89 visit was the year the section of rudder fell off on the way to Sydney.

Not sure how the Sunderland is progressing as I haven't been back since I took the photo - usual situation, never visit the places you live near. I'm sure there's somebody on the forum who would be able to answer that. The Concorde shot would be after 1989 as I had jumped ship from TVNZ to TV3 in October 1989 and this photo was taken on the way home from a TV3 shoot. Was there another visit in 1994 as that date rings a bell for some reason.
