Hi Dave,
That was the demonstrator Dehavilland which was shipped to NZ for a sales tour in 1948, the RNZAF/ Government officials were so impressed they brought it and order 29 more. This became NZ1801 and is why it was always different to the rest of the fleet as it was a earlier model (Dove mk1) as was NZ1802 they less options and in VIP layout (no de ice on the leading edges etc). It was ZK-AQV for the tour, in 1971 and became VH-MGT

Oh wow. Thanks Mit. What a shame it's looking so poor now, what a comparison that makes to the original photo.
Has anyone stepped up and rescued it I wonder?

Minor correction - the registration was ZK-AQV as noted above.

Thanks Les. I was confused by the National Library's title saying it was ZK-AOV, I Googled that initially and found that to be a Tiger Moth. This makes sense now.

Just noticed something I never realised - the pitot head is mounted on the tail fin. Obviously relocated during the life of the aircraft, and also on other Devon aircraft, as I cannot recall ever climbing up there to do a pitot static test.

Well spotted Les. Looking around Google Images i don't see any RNZAF Devons with the pitot up on the fin, and even NZ1801 does not have it in this photo: The above copied from here nz.pinterest.com/pin/423127327470497919/

That flag on the tail is unusual, it is not the New Zealand flag, it has white stars instead of red, and they're too widely spaced.

The flag was on the aircraft when it arrived, I believe, and may be simply that they had not got round to superimposing the red stars on the white.

Obviously, the move from the fin was a fairly early modification.

And the body of the flag is red, not blue, which makes it the NZ Ensign. Stars are too far apart though. In my humble opinion

Under the wing Camtech if I remember correctly. But I don't remember which wing!

In my humble opinion Indeed it does look to be red, which would mean the lettering of the ZK rego and the cheat lines look to be red too, with white outlines. I'd love to see a coloured photo of it.

Nope, wrong again. Left side of the nose, under and slightly ahead of the cockpit.

Nope, wrong again. Left side of the nose, under and slightly ahead of the cockpit. That sounds like it. Just looked at several photos, but none of them are the right angle.

Thanks noooby - that was were I started to figure out it was, as it was in the same vicinity as the static vent.
