Nice shots, always fun to see the banner pickups at Ardmore. Actually that's one of the few times I've seen that Cub doing it, it's mostly been a C-182 (WKK) since the Citabria went offshore.

Ah yes - I remember when. Wellington Aero Club - must have been 1964 when Bruce James did a few Banner tows in one of the Wellington Aero Club Piper Cubs. Can't remember which one but either ZK-BSK, ZK-BQN or ZK-BTV. The banner was not snatched of from a low fly past as above - but the banner was laid out in front of the Cub along the direction of takeoff and it was then peeled off the ground during the take off. Naturally it worked better with some wind on the nose. We then did one with two up using all 90hp and as we rounded Point Jerningham with not a great deal of altitude the banner came adrift and dropped into the harbour - and that was the last I heard of that project.

Hi Kiwi172, I recall Bruce James towing banners with a WAC Cub and have an idea it was BTV. During the 50s WAC did a lot of banner towing from Rongotai with Tiger Moths in the manner you describe. After they sold their last Tiger in late 1957 occasionally ZK-BMY of the Wairarapa club would come over and do banner towing

At one stage - maybe around 1980) the late Gus Pyper did some banner towing in his Auster (BGU?) off Kaitoke, using the "take off over the banner" method.
