Hi all
I am kinda familiar with the Nelson area and have visited John Smith many many times over the years. But these fires have me wondering/worrying how far they are from his place??
Anyone know?
Cheers Anthony

From Google Maps Pigeon Valley where the fire is, is about 12 kilometres south of Mapua where I believe Mr Smith's collection is located.

Cheers Anthony I have found this map of the fire area, www.nelsontasmancivildefence.co.nz/pigeon-valley-fire-mapYou can see it's mainly a forest block unless it crosses Pigeon Valley Road to the south. It's a very long time ago but I think John Smith is way to the north near Mapua although Upper Moutere is the district. I know at least one enthusiast who supplies local gen other bogs has been evacuated from his home. We hope that all is well, Ray

Thanks Ray....will keep a close eye on this I think. I just had a rep in who was in Nelson yesterday and said they are saying up there that it was officially out of control...

The forecast for Nelson today is " light winds and sea breezes " and the wind velocity currently is NW 6 km/hr.

Looks like the fire is heading south rather than North West according to the link Ray sent. Those residents appear to be in the evacuation and prepare to evacuate zone. A good friend of Baz and I is in the 'red' fire zone....hope their stuff will be safe as well as their lovely Auster.

Just been to see Anthony at his work as Teresa had an eye exam. Studying the "fire zone" online it looks to be a fair distance from John Smith's farm so hopefully safe. However the building with the aircraft collection is surrounded by trees so that is a concern if the fire gets close. Our friend John (JK) and Sally Kelly's house is showing right on the edge of the fire zone and the workshop with the Auster (which has just had the fabric done!) is showing on the edge of the zone so we can only hope its not been destroyed. JK is away from home doing contract electrical work so Sally (and their dog and cats) was one of the first to be evacuated and she was on TV1 News last night. Shes not worried about possessions as things can be rebuilt but they have several sheep which couldn't be evacuated and I know she's worried for their welfare as are the other animal owners in the area.

I read that Wakefield has been evacuated. Bill and Martin Reid live there. Very concerning, I hope their places are safe.

Yeah the fire is getting close, lets hope it's only a precaution.

Hope all is well in Nelson. Just got some relief from the Hobart fires. Sending a cold front your way.

I cant remember the actual street address for John as I have just always driven there by memory and not needed a map. Roughly trying to figure where he is on the map, those new zones look like they are getting pretty close to his place now. With high winds and a week of near 30deg, has me somewhat worried.
Anyone know more??

What is the latest on the fires? Sounds like they have had a decent couple of days wind wise which has allowed them to gain greater control. Must be plenty of fuel there though as they are saying that they could still be working on putting it out in March! This must raise some questions about the wisdom of planting Pine forests in areas that are prone to dry conditions especially if the climate continues to change in the ways it seems to be doing. And guess there will also be further questions about forest management if there is evidence that the tree waste left behind after felling has had any impact on the amount of fuel available to the fire.

Alan Beck and Beck Helicopters have been posting a lot on Facebook about their two machines and fuel tanker being used down there, sounds like a lot of hours flown and a commendable job by Nelson ATC working with dozens of choppers and a couple of fixed-wing machines.
