Sorry if this appears in another thread as it's 7-day-old news: www.nzherald.co.nz/business/news/article.cfm?c_id=3&objectid=12261025This will come as no surprise to those of us who have the slightest inkling of what it may cost to operate a Dash 8 between say AKL and NPE or NSN - it ain't $39 per seat! When JQ burst forth onto these routes it was with great fanfare from many, including some on this Board. Sadly, those many were not considering what the true cost of operating those services was, and therefore they weren't asking themselves what/who was going to subsidise the services - because something had to. Surely no one expected JQ to happily make a loss on services so NPL etc could have budget-priced air services? I'll be very sorry to see JQ pull out because competition is the keynote - but I don't expect any carrier to run back and forth just for the fun of it.

Well few carriers do any operating for "fun" but not all fly certain routes simply to make bucket loads of money, believe it or not. And you can rest assured that there not 50 seats for $39 on a 50 seater aircraft, maybe only a small handful if you're lucky! Same at Air NZ who sell many seats below $39, but not all of them!

Exactly. Same with any transport carrier including Intercity who' seats can range between $1 and $80 per journey. But they do not push the upper range in the advertising.
