My father, Leonard James Wyman (Len) served in the RAF as a Nav/AI on Nightfighters during WW2. He completed a full tour with 85 Sqn, then did an Instructional Tour before joining 488NZ Sqn shortly before D-Day. He served with 488 until its disbandment and was very proud of his time as part of the Squadron. During his time with 488, he progressed from Flt Sgt to Warrant Officer, Pilot Officer and Flying Officer. He finished his RAF Service as a Flt Lt. Through myself, he passed memories to Graham Clayton for his book "Gone The Dark Night" and he was so pleased to receive a copy on Fathers Day last. It is with utmost sadness that I report that Dad passed away in his sleep early on 16 April 2020 at the age of 97. Unfortunately, he caught a severe chest infection 10 days ago and, despite antibiotic treatment, he had become too frail to fight it. I thought that i should tell you of the passing of one of the last (if not the actual last) of 488's WW2 Aircrew.

I'm very sad to hear that ceejay. My condolences to you and your family. RIP Len. Hear hear CeeJay, sorry to hear about the passing of Len. In the last couple of months I've read both Graham Clayton's book on 488 & David Palmers & Aad Neevens joint effort on 487... both great books that have rekindled my passion for WW2 RNZAF history (now re-reading the Ducellier/Parry story of the Amiens prison raid by 487 et al). I'm so pleased Len got to see the book, especially with his obvious pride in being part of the story! I see his wedding photo on page 242. I'll raise a beer to him this evening! cheers...Gibbo

Very sorry to hear of your loss. I wouldn't be surprised if your father was the last airman of 488 squadron.
Condolences to your family and my grateful thanks to your father for his service.
Adam
