Hi All, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year Some quick questions, maybe a long shot, but you don't know unless you ask right I know we have some former RNZAF A4 Techs on the forum, and the question is do you recall or have it documented what the actual Fin height was for the "Squared" off fin for our A4K's (as opposed to general A4F's) As usual you have the "Know it all's on the net", who simply state it was just squared off along the tail fin Leading edge and rudder Don't know if I agree but over to you? I know the Kahu upgrades had Flare Dispensers, did the early A4K's have them also? (can't find decent pics) Many thanks Regards Alan

The fin height was pretty much the same, it was just a different shape at the front. The original A-4Ks (single seaters only) had the capability for the chaff/flare dispensers but were never fitted with them until Kahu.

I'm picking then, that the space on the fuselage for the Chaff/Flare dispensers would have just been blanked off with metal skinning? Thanks/regards Alan

Yes it was the same post Kahu when no CDS buckets were fitted, blanking plates filled the holes.

The ALE-39 dispensers housings weren't present on the pre kahu a/c, where they? So they were not simply blanked off in the same way as they were on the post kahu aircraft, afaik there was nothing visible aft of the hell hole where the CDS dispensers would eventually be fitted. However I can't find a photo of this area pre kahu.
Post Kahu there were fairly substantial blanks fitted to the dispenser housings. So you had the dispenser housing that did sit slightly proud of the airframe (I recall PRCing around them after replacing one), and then the blanks (which I recall were weighted to account for the lack of magazine for CoG purposes)which were screwed into the housings.

Hi Phil,
They did have the blanks fitted pre Kahu. I have a good photo that shows them.

Terry Rae. Would have perhaps been taken in the States whilst training on the A/c.

Was there anything under those blanks pre kahu? Looks like the holes the dispensers would later be fitted to are blanked, with no dispenser housing fitted. Rather than the post Kahu blanks, which were fitted to the dispenser housings themselves, and blanked off where the magazines were fitted.

Not sure sorry Phil but I suspect you are correct that there was no housing under the blanks as the CDS was one of many systems the aircraft were "fitted for, but not with" when they arrived!
