Not sure if this has been posted before but I came across this quote from: Link: www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234981416-malta-spitfire-on-the-offensiveplus-a-few-others-more-added/When the Malta based Spitfire`s went on the offensive over Sicily during late 1942 and 1943 they were mainly painted in a variety of blue, blue grey or sea schemes, either improvised or official but these colours stood out against the greener countryside of Sicily at low level so something else was needed. At least three colour photo`s exists of a Spitfire (AR560, JMT- Personal aircraft of Wing Commander JM Thompson, OC Luqa Wing) painted in a scheme introduced for this reason and they are the famous one`s featuring AVM Sir Keith Park when he opened Safi strip. There have been various theories about the colour of this aircraft but my research points towards a repaint in Malta using available paints. Here is the Spitfire which Park flew; The article itself is an interesting insight into Spitfire colour schemes during the Malta period

If you get the chance you might like the book 'Malta Spitfire Vs - 1942: Their Colours and Markings' by Brian Cauchi, it's an interesting read.
Cheers, HB
P.S. The link comes back to this page rather than Britmodeller?
