Though not born in New Zealand, he grew up and was educated here, and returned after his RAF service.
Obituary
MR L. B. McGOVERNE
One of 3ZB’s original announcers, Mr Lionel Beaumont McGoverne, died in Christchurch yesterday. He was aged 63.
3ZB listeners before the Second World War would recall Mr McGoverne’s Sunday afternoon programme, “Wings Over Iraq.”
Mr McGoverne was born in England, came to New Zealand as an infant and was educated at Otago Boys’ High School.
In 1924 after returning to England he enlisted in the Royal Air Force, was posted to the Uxbridge Flying School for training and was then posted to the Middle East and later India where he served till 1933.
He returned to New Zealand and in 1937 joined 3ZB where he stayed till 1939 when he was recalled to the Royal Air Force and posted direct to Singapore on the outbreak of hostilities.
After the fall of Singapore and Hong Kong he returned to New Zealand where he served with the New Zealand Army. At the end of the war be joined the Health Department in Christchurch and retired in 1960 because of ill health.
Mr McGoverne is survived by his widow, six sons and four daughters.
