Air Fair marks RAF’s 90th anniversary
19 March 2008
TOP flight entertainment is planned for this year's Air Fair to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the Royal Air Force.
This year's Air Fair at Biggin Hill, due to take place on June 7 and 8, has spectacular entertainment lined up with a galaxy of famous aircraft and displays.
The Avro Vulcan V-bomber from the years of the Cold War is expected to be one of the highlights of the annual event and the Breitling Jet team will make a welcome return, this time as a seven-ship formation flying the L-39 Albatros jet trainer.
Also returning to the show after a five-year rebuild is the Fairey Swordfish from the Royal Navy's historic flight.
The vintage biplane, known as the 'Stringbag', features an underslung torpedo marking its successful wartime carrier-borne role, notably the night attack at Taranto on the Italian fleet in November 1940.
A display by a Hawker Hunter will evoke the history of RAF Biggin Hill in the years following WWII.
The first of the supersonic fighters in squadron service in the early 1950s, the Hunter was the last operational aircraft to serve at Biggin Hill before closure as an RAF station in 1957.
The planned finale will be a dramatic airfield attack, with impressive pyrotechnics adding a dimension of realism.
Other attractions will include a daily parade of up to 100 classic cars in the motoring arena and a military village will exhibit wartime history.
Fairground rides and refreshments will also be available.
Advance tickets are £17 for adults, £5 for children or £36 for families (two adults and three children).
Tickets at the gate are £21 for adults, £7 for children and £45 for families.
Children of five and under are free and car parking is available.
n Call 01959 578270 or 01959 578271 or go to www.bigginhillairfair.co.uk for tickets and information.
