Ha ha! Yes indeed, try searching for a serial or unit code! The Italians have been doing it for awhile now, after having obvious national markings on their aircraft.

It's the in thing, now, apparently; this Slovak air Force C-27 just has the national shield outlined on the fin in grey.

Some more images of the Italian Herc departing for the ice. The Italians have their own research facility in Antarctica with its own runway, so they don't use Williams Field adjacent to McMurdo and Scott Base on the Ross Ice Shelf. Zuchelli Station is located on the Terra Nova inlet and the runway adjacent to it but being an ice runway and the Italians not having ski-equipped aircraft, there are times of the season when the runway is too difficult to land on for non-ski equipped aircraft - the NYANG Hercs are the only C-130s that go to the ice with skis fitted. Because of this the Italians are in the process of building a bigger gravel runway close to Zuchelli Station.

A promo photograph I took for a work thing. This particular C-17 has suffered a mechanical failure and has been grounded for a few days. A replacement has been flown from Joint Base McChord-Lewis until it's fixed. While I was taking this photograph the crews were up in the rear of the left-hand wheel sponson.
