Did they have to pay to get it like the Skyhawks? Or was it a straight out gift?

It must have been doing some illegal flying according to their claim that its last flight with the air force was in 2012. NZ6472 was retired by the air force along with its stablemates on 31 December 2001. Additionally it is not currently stored at Masterton, the background of the hangar tells me it is at Biggin Hill (Ohakea)

I'd need to check but the 2012 date isn't out of the picture. The aircraft never left Ohakea, it seems after being given the aircraft they didn't have any money to move it so it sat outside at Ohakea for a couple of years filling up with birds before Brendon took it in. I personally would be happy to buy it at the same rate draken paid, at least that way NZ would see a flying macchi again, it's the best airframe of the lot left here to fly. It cannot be sold overseas!

Dream on. They are trying to raise funds to repair the Chipmunk and restore the Harvard, plus finish off the restoration on one of their Tigers.

Random question. Did the Macchi need a GPU to start its engine? I know L-39s can start themselves without ground crew. Were the Macchis the same?
