After over two years a trip that was planned has finally come off, wife and I in Europe, plan is to squeeze in some aviation museums along the way. First stop Madrid, Museum of Aeronautics located at Cuatro Vientos Air Base around twenty mins south west of the city. (Cuatro Vientos translates to four winds) By mistake and a bit of communications breakdown my taxi driver accidentally took me to a private collection hangar sadly not open to the public. One of the chaps who worked there explained this happens a lot. Got chatting he asked where I came from I explained I live in Australia and grew up in New Zealand. He was very proud to tell me the prized aeroplane of the collection was their I-16 which of course is an ex Alpine fighter Collection machine, kindly allowed me in to get a pic, nice score by pure fluke. Now in the markings of a Republican Air Force, machine “nick named “Mosca" (housefly) by the loyalists and "Rata" (rat) by the rebels. After a ten minute taxi ride to the other side of the airfield found the museum I had come to see. A number of the larger aeroplanes outside and 7 hangars with a bit of a theme of different eras housed at each. Early types, may as well have a bit of fun here as I am not familiar with a lot of the types displayed so please feel free to jump in and name what you see. A B C D E F G H I J K L More soon.........

Thanks Brett love to learn and you are educating me and others, thank you. Batch of mono plane single engine jobs, especially pleased to have a good look over the Buchon and Triplala. Z. 1 Bit of a hint on the tail plane she is painted in two schemes like the I-15 above. 2 3 4 Bit of a fan of the Buchon, all the movies that have been in I guess, don’t often see them in their original service schemes. 5 6 Tried to capture the Tripala from same angle as the above Buchon. So this is a Hispano-Suiza engined version of the 109, as apposed to the Merlin powered Buchon. Found a great link you will see below tells the story. acesflyinghigh.wordpress.com/2019/02/02/spains-messerschmitt-bf-109-hybrids-the-hispano-aviacion-ha-1112-tripala-and-buchon/7 Bit of detail, the canon shrouds are interesting, also a wing fence. 8. Note the fence and the small rockets where fitted to a few aeroplanes in the museum. Be interesting to find out more about the fences, it also looks like maybe the canons where taped over to stop foreign matter getting in? 9. 10 Seriously armed up Harvard, wing mounted guns and those mini rockets again. 11

Also pretty certain there is a BA (Klem?) Eagle in there too (12th from top of thread, above the Dornier Wal), much like the one flown across the Tasman Sea in late 1930s by somebody named Pat O'Hara (I think, from memory). Final note; there is no such aircraft as a DH 60G-III Moth Major - it can be a DH 60G-III or a Moth Major, but not both at the same time (as indicated by designations - one powered by a Gipsy III, the other by a Gipsy Major, very closely related of course).

Hi. Great photos! A piece of advice if I may ask; I am hoping to have a very short window of time in Madrid in a few weeks. Can you give an idea of how long it takes to get around the museum?

Hi. Great photos! A piece of advice if I may ask; I am hoping to have a very short window of time in Madrid in a few weeks. Can you give an idea of how long it takes to get around the museum? Sorry for my slow reply only just spotted this, there is a lot to see, if I am to the point in answering most of the day if you are super keen! I arrived there just after opening and walked out at closing time, knew I would more than likely never get back and it is a big collection. Getting there, of course depends where you are staying, it is fair hike from the city centre, public transport you could train then walk, I just bit the bullet and paid for a taxi. I did end up at the wrong place which was down to my lack of Spanish? Luckily this is only ten or so minutes taxi from the Air Force Museum, would be too far to walk though. There is another collection on the airfield, Infante de Orleans, they have one of the ex Alpine Fighter Collection Ratas, by a stroke of luck and kindness I managed to have a quick look at this lot as well! Couple of videos of firstly the Spanish Air Force Museum, a lot to see! Infante de Orleans, a speedy walk around.

Thanks for the info and suggestions. Very much appreciate real advice rather than just reviews on the net. I don’t know how much time I will have but I am definitely going to give it a try.
