Err... Bruce...NZ5804 took part in 1953 London-Christchurch Air Race in October 1953 flown by Wing Commander R F Watson, but withdrew after engine failure and emergency landing in Ceylon, Maybe it had topped up with British oil before leaving London?

More years ago than I care to remember (possibly 20) when I was wandering around Dairy Flat I am sure I saw what I took to be some engines and some flying surfaces from a Hastings behind a hangar. Can anyone confirm or correct this recollection ? They were certainly not there on a visit last year .

It is possible that they were from the Motat collection as they hve stored other stuff at Dairy Flat in the past, including their Avenger which is now back on site at Motat 2.
When I was at Dairy Flat in Feb 05 there was a float from a Sunderland or Solent behind one of the hangars too. And a decrepid Devon. Interesting place.

Could be the additional bits that Motat hold in addition to thier nose section. In addition to the Bristol Hercules and prop on display beside the nose there is also an inboard nacelle with undercarriage leg (which gives some idea of the size of these beasts) which I last saw in the restoration hangar. Motat have stored items off site in the past, so this could be what you saw. The weeds at Dairy flat have also hidden a number of Devon carcases and more recently the Heron (now at Tauranga) so it could be possible that some of those bits may be what you saw.

Bruce, I took these last year at MoTaT: I think this last photo is of the tailwheel from a Hastings, and it is connected to a motor (pictured in the foreground) which powers it through the retraction/extension sequence.

The bits you saw at Dairy Flat would have been Solent parts that I bought of Ron Dwen and moved from Ardmore to storage at Dairy Flat (by the CAF Hangar) before sending them on to Richmond, California for the Solent III owned by the Grant Bros. As well as engine and propellor spares I managed to get some airframe bits that he had, this would have been about 1985/6 I'll post some photos some time, probably in my "Stash" thread. Steve, Fern leaf roundels were introduced in 1957

Shorty, when I was last at Dairy Flat in Feb 2005 there was at least one Sunderland or Solent float there behind the CAF hangar and some other bits lying round (including a Devon fuselage). Was that float part of your haul perhaps?

The float you spotted Dave at the CAF Base at Dairy Flat was not part of the Hastings Hercules haul which Shorty describes was stored and ultimately packed at the CAF Base for the Grant Brothers for their Solent project in Oaklands, California. It was a Sunderland Float picked up in the 1980's by memory from chappy who had it in the Henderson area which was to be included as an exhibit in our projected CAF Museum. The mob presently inhabiting the CAF Base I believe sent it down to the Classic Flyers Museum in Tauranga within the last twelve months. On the subject of the Grant Brothers Solent now owned by Rick Grant having bought out his brother's share in the aircraft, I had the opporunity to visit this Solent on display at the Western Aerospace Museum at Oakland Airport to view it inside and out in October 2007. She was looking rather swish in her new paint job. Unfortunately she is outside and not under cover. Refer svsm.org/gallery/SolentMk-III
