I just returned for my local model club at the Doncaster Aircraft Museum with an Airfix 1/48th Canberra and the Model Alliance decals sheet for RNZAF Canberras.
Reading the color schemes has me confused. I thought the B (I)12 were delivered in overall High Speed silver with Standard RAF roundels, then the White Ferns were applied in NZ. These were replaced by Silver Ferns as the aircraft were serviced . By late 1964 all were repainted in Dark Sea Grey/ Dark green but kept the Silver underside and the Ferns were silver by this time.
Airfix supply white ferns for their camouflaged option, Model Alliance supply only silver ferns and yet have both an overall Silver aircraft and one they suggest is Dark Green/Dark Sea Grey/Light Aircraft Grey.
Also did the RNZAF aircraft actually use the belly gun pack? I can't find a photo of one fitted.
Help!

Silverfox your overview of the colour schemes is pretty well correct as far as my research went - except the aircraft did fly for a reasonable period of time in NZ with plain roundels before the ferns went on. my investigations suggest that the undersides of the camo aircraft were indeed silver, but maybe this changed again during the malayan dployment? do a search of the forum for canberra (use the tool on the toolbar under the header) because there have been some excellent colour photos of RNZAF Canberras posted in the past.

oops the only problem with a search on "Canberra" is that all of Corsair 67's post come up (he has Canberra as the location on his posts!)

I'll take Canberra out of my profile so you can do a search.

RNZAF B12s never had the gun pack fitted because it wasn't purchased. The RAF B8 which carried it was different from the B12,
The under-surface of the Canberra was silver.

Ou Canberras never carried the white fern as it was only on RNZAF aircraft for around 18 months from the middle of 1957. It was replaced by a siliver fern transfer over the red centre of each roundel. These are often hard to see in photos unless you are close-up. I have recently completed an extensive research article for a UK based modellor on the Canberras. The camo scheme was introduced in late 1964 on the upper surfaces but the silver was retained underneath and the blue/white/red roundels. Of interest is the large black serials during the overall silver and white in the early camo era, replaced by smaller black serials 8" fuselage later on. Gun packs were never fitted as they weren't purchased. The Role of our canberras was the bomber/interdictor one not fighter/bomber.

The RAF B8 wasn't a fighter/bomber either! Its designation was B [for Bomber], for interdictor.

Thanks guys for all your replies, I thought I was on the right track. As TBF2504 says it is hard to see the fern no matter what colour especially on black and white photos.
I'll be starting my model some time soon.
