I won't make a habit of this but I was visiting the Auckland Botanical gardens with camera in hand and thought I would have a bit of practice on some Duck action. I got this one and titled it Flaps down, gear down brakes on, Runway H2O! Just something to amuse your day and has anyone else got an amusing shot to share?

Excellent photo, Colin.
I know this is supposed to an avaition forum, but while looking at photos like this (and the ones Alex posted a couple of weeks ago) it's easy to see why mankind has always been fasinated by the thought of being able to fly.
It just took them a few centuries to realise that flapping wings weren't the way to go! ;D

If you look at some of the first aircraft, especially the German ones, they look very bird like. The wings are almost copies of a birds!

That's a great shot - you can see the concentration on his face!

Thanks guys and as I said I won't make a habit of this and it was flight associated, well landing anyway. I will stick to Beaver's or Otter's in future or anything else with floats. (At least my photobucket skills have improved!)

Hey, Grumman Ducks are most welcome here Colin.
This General Board is fr discussing anything at all byt the way, aviation or non-aviation, so it's fine to post stuff like this here, and shots like the one above are always welcome.

Where I work at the university, we often used to encourage video production students to go out and film ducks - it is actually very good at polishing up camera skills. That is a really good photo Colin - and there is actually a lot of similarity to an aircraft in landing config!

"That's a great shot - you can see the concentration on his face!" Whose face? Colin ;D's or the duck's? LOL He he yea I reckon there was more concentration on my face for sure! Thanks Dave for the reassurance. Bruce you uncovered my real reason for "shooting" ducks. Nice to know about practice for video cameras too. I need extra practice as I have an ambition to catch a Tui and/or Wood Pigeon in flight and they are much faster than a duck. I think this shot has a very faint blur to it though even though it was 1/500 th sec f9 and 200 ISO. 80-400 is a little slow at times focusing and I need to polish my technique to make it better. Getting used to our gear sure makes it easier for when the Hunter flashes past.

Looks like that duck had a much better success of landing than that Cessna Citation that ended up taxi-ing on 1 engine on the water !!!
