Geez, Canberra Airport isn't much now so it was probably only a dirt strip in the 1960s! ;D

Yep, the RAAF base was on the eastern side of the field, but apart from 34SQN (the VIP Squadron) the RAAF has pretty much left town. QANTAS does all the maintenance for the 737 BBJs and Challenger 604s.
All the houses, hangars and associated buildings are still there, but I don't know what they're used for now.
The runway has been extended and can now handle all the big stuff, which was handy recently because an Antonov 124 had to come into Canberra to deliver two Erikson Skycranes for the bushfire season.

CB was tarmac in 1953. I lived with my family, Dad was in the RAAF, at Fairbairn. I cycled some days to school at the suburb of Duntroon. One day my fingers nearly froze to the handlebars. We used to watch Austers doing circuits. That was when I decided I must learn to fly one day. It only took 22 years.
Dad was a navigator on C-47s for the VIP flights. He was in the Governor-General's flight and was slated for the Royal tour which was cancelled when King George VI died and Princess Elizabeth had to go back to Blighty to run the family business.
"G" for George was parked behind some hangars and was deteriorating. Thankfully she was rescued and placed in the AWM.
