A few weeks ago there was some discussion on this site about the Jindalee Over-the-horizon Radar Network, and whether it was still operational. Well it obviously is still up and running, and Defence are spending a lot of money on it.

Jindalee support contracts awarded

THE Defence Department has concluded two contracts worth almost $400 million for the maintenance of the Jindalee over-the-horizon radar system (JORN) over the next five years.
RLM Pty Ltd has been awarded a $262 million contract for support of the two JORN radar network sites at Laverton in Western Australia and Longreach in Queensland.
Defence has signed a second contract worth $131 million with BAE Systems Australia for the support of Jindalee's Alice Springs site.
Defence Minister Brendan Nelson said the two contracts would provide employment for more than 300 people, with more than half the jobs located at the Edinburgh Defence Precinct near Adelaide.
"The new contracts will standardise engineering, logistics and maintenance support procedures across both contractors and the commonwealth and consolidate the maintenance of specialist transmitter and receiver equipment," Dr Nelson said. "Additionally, the new contracts contain an acquisition development component which provides for the future capability development of the over-the-horizon network."
The JORN network provides 24-hour all-weather detection of surface vessels and low-flying aircraft across the northern approaches to Australia up to 2000km from the mainland. It also provides assistance to Customs and Immigration in the detection of illegal entrants to Australia, illegal fishing and smuggling as well as data to assist weather warnings.
