In about April 2006 a collection of warbirds in Australia were apparently impounded by the tax department, and I am sure they included two ex-NZ aircraft, the TBM Avenger and the Sea Fury.
What has happened to them and the other aircraft impounded? There was some talk that the Sea Fury was returning to NZ.

Dave, haven't heard any more since. I'd imagine it is still to go before the courts though.

Thanks Craig. What a shame. I hope if they're still impounded they're being properly looked after.

I would imagine that the ATO are taking very good care of them in a "secure, undisclosed location"; as if they end up putting them up for sale to recoup costs it's really in their best interest to make sure they get top dollar for them.

The aircraft are in a hangar at Archerfield Airport. The Avenger is not in this collection. Eight a/c are:- VH-AVC T-28, VH-SHF SEA FURY, VH-SHI CAP 232, VH-SHT T-28, VH-SIC L-39, VH-USN SNJ-5, VH-WEM DH-82, VH-YAY YAK 50. Can not comment on the present situation re any sale of these a/c. Collection known as "Flying Fighters"

Hi all
I was at Archerfield yesterday and the bulk of these aircraft are still in the same hangar untouched. The impound order was supposed to require them to be engine and system run "regularly" but this has not happened. Ownership is still being contested and the aircraft are deteriorating. I have pics from yesterday - email me at ianmcdonell@rocketmail.com if you would like a copy

Many years ago I visited the Flying Fighters collection, the ex Alpine Fighter Collection Yak 3 reproduction was also in the hangar when I visited, the Sea Fury formerly owned by Grant Biel based at Ardmore, this machine crossed the Tasman on five occasions!

I often wonder about those machines, the Yak and Sea Fury especially given their Kiwi connections. I remember seeing photos a year or three ago of them fenced/roped off.
It's coming up on ten years. Based on what little info is available I'd guess a bit of work will be needed for any of them to fly again.

That is one plane I would love to see and hear fly again! It is great we still have videos on YT to remind us of her power and vertical ability. Plus she was an NZ plane for a period of time.

The Sea Fury? Oh yes. I don't remember seeing her fly (I was at the 1989 RNZAC pageant but have no recall of any of it) and it's one of those machines I want to see - and hear - fly in person.

There are still many of them flying overseas Zac if you are that keen.

Mainly in the US Dave (several), I think there is one flying in UK - not sure... I didn't see one when I travelled around several museums and a couple of airshows.

There was a Sea Fury flying at the Jersey gig in 2010, and I'm sure I saw one at the FAA museum at Yeovilton?? I'm sorry to say I took very little notice of it as the Vulcan and the Red Arrows were always going to be the big drawcards in Jersey, and I kept going back to the Corsair and especially the Wyvern in Yeovil....

There's an airworthy Sea Fury in Australia, isn't there?

Yes I think you are correct - I did see a Sea Fury in the Fleet Air Arm Museum at Yeovilton but is it a runner or not? Or is that the one that had the engine problem and then had an U/C failure on landing last year? They have the Sea Venom there I think as a flyer - I wouldn't mind seeing that fly with two RR Avons kicking butt...

There might well be Dave, the Aussie population seems to change every so often. From memory Gus Larard has an all-blue RAN-schemed one.

Oh yes, thanks Baz, - the Venom is only single engined. The Sea Vixen is quite a lot bigger - large indeed for a naval attack plane. And she is noisy!!
