FYI
The latest edition of RNZAF News mentions that Paul Harrison (an old boss of mine) has been commissioned by the No 5 Sqn Association to write a book on the history of the P3-B/K in service with the RNZAF since 1966, and will be published in Sep 06, to mark the 40th anniversary of the Orion in RNZAF Service.
One to look out for.

This sounds like a good idea. Paul Harrison is a great author too. I'm sure he;ll do it justice. Thanks for the heads up Sean.

Here are some more details of this book: The book launch of Kiwi Orions is scheduled for September this year and will coincide with the 40th anniversary of the introduction of the P3 into RNZAF service. The cost of a copy is estimated to be somewhere around NZ$30 but perhaps less - much depends on demand. The more copies printed, the lower the cost. To estimate the size of the print run it is necessary to gauge likely demand. We therefore urge anyone at all who might want a copy to register a no obligation expression of interest. This invitation extends to non Association members, the general public and people who live overseas. To register your interest send an email to the Association Secretary b-nelson@clear.net.nz or simply click on the site feedback link www.5sqnassn.org.nz/feedback.htm and indicate yes to book. We guarantee no hard sell follow-up. A b o u t t h e B o o k Kiwi Orions is being researched and written by noted author Paul Harrison and promises to be a very good read for all those associated in any way with the Lockheed P3 Orion and indeed for anyone with an interest in aviation or the RNZAF. It would also make a great gift for an aviation minded friend or associate. Kiwi Orions will start with the project development period prior to delivery in 1966 and go through to the present day. In doing so it will go behind the scenes and beyond bare historic facts. The book will extend to anecdotes about past and present 5 Squadron operations, adventures and personalities. The kiwi Orions story is eminently collectable. It will one day no doubt fascinate future generations of readers who will likely live in a world where the Orion has been replaced by an all tech no charm unmanned aircraft. Any one interested in a copy should use the following link to register their interest: www.5sqnassn.org.nz/noticeboard.html

After some discussion on this thread got too indepth with politics and too far away from the subject Paul Harrision's book, followed by a suggestion that I was responsible for the meandering of the thread because i was not moderating it right, I have removed all the topics which were irrellevent to the thread.
I accept partial blame for the posts of course as i was involved, but now the political topic is closed and this thread is for discussion of the book please, and the Orion anniversary if necessary.
Sorry to be heavy handed, but apparently I have not been moderating enough of my own posts to keep it civil. I shall try harder in future.

Dave....just robust discussion....all discussion i read was civil...maybe i missed something...however i really appreciated yours and others political views which are, in this country more common than mine... defence is political and differences and passion of beliefs are important to discuss ...it can be a little tricky to limit discussion to a particualr thread in this case the upcoming Orion Book (which I ordered !) However as moderator you have to be.... i suppose Speaker of the House and Prime Minister at the same time!! Na ..you are doing an excellent job..........Do you think a defence polictical sub board is worth considering ....where all polical views from the far left to the far right are expressed in relation to foreign afffairs/defence?
As for me ....i would join the commie party if we could reinstate the former status of RNZAF ....sorry done it again way of topic!!.....

I wonder if they have the single aircrew fatality in there? A good friend on a crew of a P3 collapsed on a flight some distance out of Auckland, and the pilot put the nose down and tail up and made a very fast continuous max air speed return to Whenuapai, but sadly to no avail. Flt lt ........was dead on arrival, an air embolism or something as I recall.
