I picked this book up this week and have begun to read it. I'm only into the second chapter but I'm extremely impressed by the book, it's really absorbing and gripping. It's the true story of the capture of the author Gordon Woodroofe after ditching in the North Sea, and his many attempts to escape. Apparently in the end he became the only New Zealand airman to escape a nazi prisoner of war camp and make it back to England safely. I'm not sure if that's accurate, but I guess it maybe - a lot of others who were downed and evaded and got back were never captured, or were only in custody ratherr than a POW camp (such as Chalky White and Johnny Checketts). Anyway, I can definately recommend this book, and if you want to know more, this page has the blurb from the back of the book with a few more details homepages.ihug.co.nz/~woodr/Getaway/And this page has quotes from reviews from various publications, all glowing homepages.ihug.co.nz/~woodr/Getaway/Reviews1.htmAnd if you're wondering about the letters in the book's title GeTaWay, it's his initials.
