I have just received a copy of the video 'Wings and Wheels: The Final Wings And Wheels At Wigram" (1993, made for RNZAF Museum) via TradeMe.
What a superb video it is. I was at the airshow but missed a lot of it as I was working. So this is great for me to see the thing again.
There's some nice footage of the classic car and bike racing, with some genuine historics there. but for me the best bit is the airshow. It has really good footage of the air displays, each display featured nice and long and most either with narration by the actual pilot who's displaying talking about his display, or with interviews with veterans who flew the type in the old days.
The air display shows:
Tiger Moth (pilot and narration - Flt Lt Phil Murray. Veteran Ramon Trollope interviewed)
Harvard NZ1015 (pilot and narration Sqn Ldr Pete Cochran)
Andover (pilot Sqn Ldr Neil Kenny)
Avenger (still in George Bush colours, we painted it the next week, pilot Rex Dovey. Veteran Peter Hope interviewed)
P-40K (pilot Tom Middleton, veteran Ian Mackenzie interviewed)
Iroquois (pilot Flt Lt Gregor McKenzie of 3 Det)
Orion (pilot Wg Cmdr Dick Newlands)
Skyhawk (Sqn Ldr John Mathewson)
Maachi (Sqn Kdr Chris Hutchinson)
Red Checkers (Ian McLelland, Peter Cocjran, Phil Murray, Bruse Craies and Paul Hughan)
There are also short clips in a montage of Kiwi Blue, a Squirrel helicopter putting out a fire with a bucket, an agricultural plane (Pawnee or AgWagon I think) and other things already mentioned.
There was some VERY low flying in the Harvard and the Skyhawk.
Somehow I was never aware that the airshow was filmed and that this tape was released. I'm so glad to have found it.
Were any other Wigram airshows filme and released as commercial tapes like this? Or any RNZAF airshows for that matter?
