Zeal320 is the AirNZ subsiduary (I think) that operates the A320s...don't really understand what the advantage was, but it came in about 12 months before the demise of Freedom.

Zeal320 is the AirNZ subsiduary (I think) that operates the A320s...don't really understand what the advantage was, but it came in about 12 months before the demise of Freedom. Correct Zeal320 is the entity that operates the A320 fleet. They operate with the former Freedom Air AOC, which they took over. From what I understand it was all due to lower costs, with Air New Zealand saying, hmm the Freedom cost base is nice and cheap why don't we do that with all our A320s, so they transfered the Freedom ops/crew to Zeal320 and then also the Air New Zealand A320s. So you had one wholly owned subsiduary (Zeal320) operating the aircraft, with a low cost crew base, and they operate the flights under the Freedom Air or Air New Zealand brand. Basically the crew/planes would operate Freedom routes for four days and then transfer to NZ ops for four days and so on, which I'm told often got confusing for the crew to work out which brand they were flying under that particular day, and occassionally resulted in some incorrect announcements over the PA. This is partly the cause of the dimise of the Freedom Brand, as with Zeal320 opertaing the aircraft and crews, then the cost for the NZ flights was similar to the cost of the SJ flights, meaning there was little difference between the full service and the low cost servce negating the need for the low cost brand. (Apologies Colin for hijacking your original thread! )

Great photos Colin. I didn't think the new QANTAS scheme would be much different to the old one, but it appears more stylised and is very smart in my opinion. The United Airlines 747 could do with a wash.

Just going back to the Air New Zealand A320's, what routes do they fly? I've never seen one. I take it they do not come near Hamilton Airport?
Nice photos Colin, I like the way you have got the United Airines livery wording to shine like it's reflecting your camera's flash.

Ive never seen one there, but then I don't really go there often. i haven't seen a Boeing 737 there for ages either, but I have heard them taking off in a couple of occasions lately (assuming it was 737's).

They mostly fly the trans-Tasman routes, Dave. I have flown on A320s from Sydney-Christchurch on several occasions. They also seem to do a few runs between the main centres at peak times too.

A comment was added to my photo on Airliners.net that two days after the pic the aircraft was retired and withdrawn from service. N196UA. www.airliners.net/photo/United-Airlines/Boeing-747-422/1417691/L/Four years ago now we went to Christchurch from Auckland and it was a ANZ 767-219 ZK-NBC as one of the 737 was in for maintenance. The trip back was a 737 though. www.airliners.net/photo/Air-New-Zealand/Boeing-767-219-ER/0569915/L/I have noted the A320 on domestic duties from time to time while spotting from the covered car park at AKL. When I have visited Christchurch spotting I have got almost every one during the day or seems like it and most go to International. Cheers

Beautiful photo Colin, and that scheme is much more appealing than the grey one.

The image of the departing United B744 and the moon, just a straight cut of blue sky and the plane and the moon will be closer together....

Nice to see UA back in NZ skies, albeit for a short time. The PB scheme grows on you I reckon.
