Vietnamese leader meets John KeyNew 12:24PM Thursday Sep 10, 2009 Vietnam's senior leader Nong Duc Manh was welcomed amid pomp and ceremony at Parliament this morning. Following a traditional Maori challenge which had Mr Manh, the General Secretary of the Vietnamese Communist Party, looking slightly worried, Prime Minister John Key and Speaker Lockwood Smith welcomed him. They chatted about the beautiful Wellington weather and the unusually shaped Beehive before the Vietnamese leader inspected the troops and stood with his delegation and New Zealand politicians while both countries anthems were played by a military band. An official lunch will be held in Parliament's banquet hall after a meeting with Mr Key. The large Vietnamese delegation contained several ministers, including Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister Pham Gia Khiem. "Vietnam is one of the most impressive economic performers in South East Asia and it has staved off the effects of the global downturn better than most," Mr Key said earlier in the week. "Vietnam's GDP growth figures over the past decade have been stellar and it is becoming an increasingly important trading partner for New Zealand." The two countries were hoping to work more closely in areas such as education, science and technology. "We welcome these growing links and see the relationship between our two countries offering great potential to both sides." Mr Manh arrived in Auckland yesterday. - NZPA www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10596427

Maybe Mr Key is testing the waters to see if Vietnam has any MiG-21s surplus to requirements that they might sell cheaply? ;D

Wouldn't that make the the Yanks think the Kiwis had gone commie? Never seen a Vietnam Airlines aircraft before. That's nicely presented. Just went back and read the entire thread - bloody nice work, Colin.

Vietnam 777-200 VN-A146 visited Christchurch in 2007, arriving from Sydney 09Sep and departing for Hanoi 12Sep. Its visit was at the conclusion of the APEC summit in Sydney. VN-A142 is set to leave Auckland on Saturday heading home. Cheers Mike

I flew Vietnam Airlines DaNang - HCMC, a 737 I think (certainly not an Antonov!). Once was quite enough.

I've done a few trips to Vietnam in the Falcon visiting Ho Chi Minh (Saigon) Cam Rahn Bay (A massive ex US airforce base..where the RNZAF used to operate into) as well as Hanoi and another place I can't pronounce! From an aviation perspective, the south is infinitely more sophisticated than the north...and it just so happens I ran into a kiwi flying ATR 72's for vietnam Airlines on contract whilst on the ramp in Ho Chi Minh......he was like the cat that had the proverbial cream...something about having 6 girlfriends..... The traffic chaos still amazes me about the place....it makes Bangkok look like Motueka on a chilly sunday morning. Love the 777 colour scheme...shame it doesn't help the crews stay awake when they fly to europe!

They unfortunately do not visit Auckland annually. This is the first recorded visit of an E6B variant to NZ. It departed Monday morning for Perth. Regards Mike

Waitangi day saw the arrival from Sydney of Czech Air Force Airbus A319 with a trade delegation visiting Australia and NZ. Flew out on Monday. Usual dull weather when out spotting and two minutes after it landed the sun came out! Cheers

Great shots as usual Colin. Is there some way that you know what's coming into Auckland in terms of special flights like the Czech one, etc? Or do you just hang around and hope for the best? You certainly capture a few unusual ones.

You certainly capture a few unusual ones. Thanks Dave. By coincidence I had arranged to meet up with a Czech spotter Vladimir on that day as he was returning home on a late flight. You can just imagine his surprise and joy to be here at the right time for the A319 and also Emirates arranged a delay(just kidding) of the A380 for about 5 hours so he got it landing and also departing. Just a lucky break for us to catch the Transmile and also the Atlas 747 transporting AC DC gear to Aussie. Mostly good luck Dave and being in the right place at the right time. A bit like fishing really some days I catch nothing. I missed the Korean Air special paint job yesterday tho. www.mrcaviation.blogspot.com/Colin

I'd be no good because every fishing trip I've been on in the last three years I've caught nothing of take home size. Well done Colin, you have a knack!
