It will be easier to get to Masterton in future as Eagle Air is to start daily flights to auckland next week. Backed by Air N.Z, Eagle Air is to use Beech 1900d's. Wings over the Wairarapa next year will be much easier to get to!

Well the post above is mostly right....I've jumped the gun in that the announcement will made next week; and not the start of the service. Had a call from the wairarapa and put the notice on the forum before checking local paper.....

I would have thought the airfield would need more work before scheduled services could begin. When the ambulance Metro goes there the runway has to be NOTAM'd closed because we have to park in the runway stub which infinges the seal runway edge. Also there is no terminal of any sort that I could see?

A photo I took at Wings over Wairarapa 2007 (January 20). Who is in the lower P-40 and Keith Skilling in the Corsair, anybody know who is flying the middle P-40? Garth Hogan maybe? Colin

Another possiblity of a NZ-based P-40 display pilot is Frank Parker. Or was maybe Stu Goldspink in NZ for that show? He came over for the Omaka show.

Pretty sure it was Frank Parker in CAG and Stu Goldspink in the ex OFMC P-40. Stu was doing very nice hesitation rolls in the P-40 which I hadnt seen done before, very cool.

Great photos - Wings Over Wairarapa is great Back to the original question - is the Beech 1900 able to use Hood as it is? I thought it needed sealed taxiways, and as far as I know, while Hood has a tarmac runway, the taxiways are all grass.

Taxiways are all grass, a new taxiway and apron would be needed at the northen end of the airport where the new terminal is proposed (at present this building is a tin shed all by itself). The runway is tarmac with PAL lighting. Eagle as part of the Air NZ group require approach lighting for it's operations (PAPI/VASI). As it is, the Metro can fit into and out of Masterton, albeit with the use of water/meths during warmer temperatures (The B1900 is more powerful and has a better power/weight ratio). A lot of work to be done, but at present there is a problem with funding. The Masterton Council can afford the development but wants to charge the surrounding council areas (Martinborough etc) for a contribution to the airport as it will boost the Wairarapa's economy as a whole. The other councils do not wish to contribute at present. There is also issues with local operators being told they may have to also fund the new development, even though they would not make use of the new tarmac and approach lighting aids. Another issue to consider is the lack of a navigation radio aid at Masterton. Airwork utilises the GPS approaches, backed up with the Ferry NDB.
