After no response from a local aviation magazine I have posted a shot taken by my father while working for CAA in 1952-55. www.postimage.org/image.php?v=aVltEvAThe quality is not great I'm afraid but the content is interesting - 26 Dakotas lined up somewhere - probably Ardmore or Whenuapai. Does anyone recognise it? Cheers and thanks for looking..

The airstrip looks far to primitive to be Whenuapai or Ardmore - especially not in the early 1950s. A clue is on the extreme LH corner in the foreground is a serviceman wearing what appears to be a US Army / marines uniform. A number of the aircraft appear to be in camouflage, which would not be the case in NZ at the time. I suspect with reasonable certainly that it is not anywhere in New Zealand, and possibly not in the early 1950s. At a guess, possibly Korea?

Interesting shot. It does not look like either Ardmore or Whenuapai. There are tall buildings in the background. It almost looks like a non-NZ airfield. The chap on the left seems to have a US uniform too.

Actually it's very flat and dusty looking, could it be in Australia?

No gum trees Dave.....Korea looks a reasonable guess given the era.

This is all very interesting, I had assumed it was from the NZCAA period. Could be 1945 Brindisi perhaps?

Too true. Stepping off the plane on Manay at Wellington into freezing rain was a welcome relief after the 35 dgrees plus I left at home. Now taht I'm back it has cooled down a little thankfully.
Where is Brindisi? Italy?

Yes Dave, Brindisi is in Italy. If the photograph is from there, it would be involving the US units operating with 334 Wing. I thought all their aircraft wore camouflage at that time which one of the reasons I expected this would be post-war.
