Hi all,
Back on deck after 3 weeks in the UK. Sorry to take so long to post but I had to work several driving courses on my return to pay the bills.
Biggin Hill was great. Invited to climb inside the BBMF Lancaster by the navigator. I then taxi-rode in "Just Jane" at East Kirkby four days later. Two Lancs in a week was a bit much for this chap. 57 years since I have been in a Lincoln.
Cosford was a "grey-out" but Kemble Air Day was terrific. Many thanks to Don Chaterton of the Delta Jets Club who provided FOC entry to the show and to DJC's marquee right on the fence. I met Don at WOW 2006.
The Vulcan XH558 is not yet ready but I was given the personal tour of the big bird in her hangar as well as the collection of aircraft outside which included the last DH Comet, a Handley Page Victor and one of the "Super Guppys" built to carry Airbus components.
The Red Arrows have a 12-ship formation these days and they put on a stunning routine.
Old Warden's Shutteworth collection and their low-key and very low level flying displays during a full day then an evening were delightful. The replica Bristol "Boxkite" flew surprisingly well... powered by a Lycoming rather than the Gnome Omega of the original. Much less affected by gyroscopic forces but it still landed abruptly with a very sudden cessation of lift.
Wales low-level was greyed out and RAF Valley similarly affected.
Coningsby over-the-fence was OK for a few Typhoons on approach from the fence surrounding the approach light array. Several anoraks were there with cameras on a hill specifically provided by the RAF.
Here are a few samples:
The Real Aeroplane Company’s Hispano Buchón HA-1112 powered by a R-R Merlin painted to represent Messerschmitt Bf109G-2 “Red 1” of JG27 pilot Hpt Werner Schroer during his Greek campaign circa early 1943. Flown at Biggin Hill by John Romain and “escorted” into the airspace by Carolyn Grace in Spitfire Tr.9 ML407.
BBMF Lancaster “The Phantom of the Rhur”/City of Lincoln.at Biggin Hill.
PF in the pilot’s seat of the BBMF Lancaster.
The RAF’s new Typhoon. Landing on the pilots’ marquee roof at Biggin Hill!
“Say no more!”
Red’s tails.
Sea Hurricane at Old Warden
Bristol “Boxkite” replica in the golden sunlight of an early English summer evening.
Gliders at Dunstable Downs.
Low-flying DH Chipmunk at Old Warden.
“Busting the tower” at Old Warden is a regular occurrence.
Westland Lysander in the rain at Old Warden.
