Thanks for the Red Checkers team list Gav. Great to see Pete Cochran there again, he must hold a world record for years with an aerobatic display team surely. He's been flying with the team at least since 1974! Amazing work.

PS - it was nice to see the Red Checkers got a little coverage of their display on TV3's coverage of the A1GP yesterday. That looked like a superb display too.

'86 must have been on a repaint recently and had a different signwriter come in to do the markings. The serial numbers do stick out from the otheraircraft. There is , well there was when i was in, a publication that stipulated the style and sizing of lettering and numbering on RNZAF aircraft. we had a problem when Safe Air was contracted to repair the Golden Eagle that crashed at Wairoa (correct me if i am wrong), they hired a civvy signwriter in and the lettering etc was totally wrong and had to be done again IAW the relavant publication.

Interesting info Gavin on the solo in RNZAF aircraft . Was just ealier tonight looking at 27 sqn ( atc ) web pages ( stumbled on them whilst searching info on our old glider tug , BSN . Was remindered that an old mate ( Malcom Handley ) is credited with being the first civy to solo in RNZAF aircraft . As you say - that must have been a real buzz .

( Malcom Handley ) is credited with being the first civy to solo in RNZAF aircraft . When was this, out of interest. I assume this refers not to test pilots, such as say Mutt Summers who flew the RNZAF's Vildebeests in 1934/35...

Sorry , in the light of day I see I have worded that incorrectly . He was the first CADET to solo in RNZAF aircraft ( not civy as I originally typed ) .It would have been 1980 or 81 if my memory serves me correctly .

Fantastic shots Gavin. I saw you lot takeoff that day and was very envious, being stuck in a 152. A very hot but satisfying day.

Yeah mate that was one of the hottest days for a while. You may have been in a 152 but the job you guys do is very admirable indeed. Having done a couple of the national flying camps, I will always remember my instructors on those courses as they were great and worked really hard and I am sure you get a lot of satisfaction from seeing those young lads and ladies taking to the skies on their own for the first time.
I am really pleased to see the RNZAF flying scholarship back and may head to Ohakea to see how the first new course goes. Pretty dissapointed to see it canned in 1994 as then we were flying the CT4B and there were 12 of us and its great that 7 cadets will get the chance to do this course and long may it continue.
