Here are a few photos from today. The Checkers came to Woodbourne to put on a display for the staff at Woodbourne as well as for the ATC cadets on the camps that finish today. Highly impressed with the Red Checkers team. Great bunch of professional guys and were a pleasure to fly with.

We used to live on a farm at Motukarara in the 80's and the Airtrainers used to do most of their aero practice over the back paddocks, using the canal for a reference, I think. Christ , they were noisy!

Fantastic photos Gavin!
Who is in the team this year? Was Woodbourne their first 'public' flying display?

Gav, I was pretty proud to see the Checkers flying alongside our Nanchang yesterday as you headed out to take those photos. It must be a bit of a coup to have photos taken by a civvy photographer in a civvy aircraft flown by a civvy pilot. It says a lot for your reputation and talent. Well done! Looking back in my old logbook, I was once a student of both SQN LDR Clark and Stockley. Stockley instructed me on my first lesson in the circuit and a few months later, Clark took me up on Formation 1. Both great memories.

Thanks for that. There were some very co-operative people that made this happen and the option was there to photograph them from the sixth aircraft but I had wanted to take the photos of the Checkers from an open cockpit with no perspex so with some hard work and convincing the right people we were away. We flew 16 different formations and had a limited time to get through it all but with a lot of work and great skill level from the six pilots we managed to do all of the formations and thats the first flight where I have changed the formation so many times. Flew everything including formation loops and the mirror so there were some interesting sights along the way. This was a one off flight that went very well and keep an eye out for the next Air Force News.

Agree with all comments - great work and thanks for posting some of your excellent pics as usual. Is the RNZAF Air Force News online? How would I get a copy if it is not please? Tah.

Great photos, Gavin. I thoroughly enjoyed that display, one of the most memorable Red Checkers shows I have seen. One of the cadets go tto go up on a one off flight in NZ1991 and came back with a smile that is probably still fixed on her face. The RNZAF also took two groups of cadets up in Orion 01 for jaunts around the Marlborough Sounds. There were no dissapointed youngsters from that trip! The Orion arrived in style with a low level high speed pass over the ATC flight line. Very impressive.

I did see the Orion arrive, and yip quite impressive. it was great to see the RNZAF take some of the cadets up on flights and I am sure they had a great time. By the way how did the course go for you and how many cadets ended tp flying solo?

The course went very well, we had brilliant weather and not too many days of howling norwesters. Unsure exactly how many cadets flew first solo, but I think it was just over 20. John will have the exact figures out soon no doubt in his post-course reports.
The CO Training Wing WGCDR Webb on behalf of the RNZAF, announced at the prize giving ceremony on Thurdsay the re-enstatement of the RNZAF Scholarship. Two cadets were nominated with a 'golden pass' to go to Ohakea in January next year to fly with CFS for two weeks in the CT4. A further five names with invitations to attend will follow before the end of the year. This will become an annual scholarship as was the case before 1994, and most of the names will come from the ATC National Aviation Course at WB.

I did hear the RNZAF scholarship was being introduced again from next year and I know that there will be a lot of competition for spaces as its one of lifes must do courses.
I was on the course in 1992 with PTS at Wigram and flew solo in an RNZAF aircraft and thats one of lifes highlights thats for sure so good luck to all of thoses attending that.
