Hi There, Hopefully if time permits from next year I am hoping to head overseas to attend some airshows and the first one I am looking at is the 2009 Avalon show.
I have heard of a package type deal that passes through Melbourne so can you guys tell me how long it takes to get from Melbourne to Geelong and does a regular shuttle service operate from the city to the show each day? Any other info on the show would be good as well.
Have worked a few big days lately so am going to hit the sack and heading out of town again first thing and will be back on Saturday so if I dont reply earlier that will be why.

Its been a few years since I was there , but I seem to recall a reasonably average trip between Melbourne and Geelong being about an hour , or perhaps a little under .Always tried to go a little off peak times though

Gavin, Melbourne to Geelong is about 45 minutes by freeway, with Avalon approx. 30 minutes from Melbourne. Shuttle buses from both Melbourne CBD and Geelong should be available on the public days. The Geelong train goes past Avalon, but not sure if there is a station handy. Another option is charter flights from Essendon or Moorabbin. Traffic can be an issue, and preferable to stay in Geelong. Be prepared to do a lot of walking as Avalon is spread out over a large area. Could spend a day in the trade display alone. Friday night is a must see if the Connie and F111 are flying. Take a hat with a brim and sun block. Allow time to visit the RAAF museum at Point Cook if possible. It is mid way between Melbourne and Avalon, and nearest station on the Geelong line is Laverton. Need to check, but there should be a bus to PC from there. Another thought. Jetstar domestic fly direct to Avalon.......they interrupt the airshow!

I went to the 07 Avalon show, and we chose to stay in Melbourne and train down. For Aus$45 you get a return train trip and free return shuttle bus to the front gate. The nearest stop to Avalon airport is the Lara station but its clearly announced over the PA and when the train all but empties you know you have arrived. The bus trip takes roughly 15 minutes each way. From memory the trains leave Melbourne/Geelong every hour during the hours of the show. I think the longest wait I had was for an empty bus to take us back to the train station after the Friday night flying display (DO NOT MISS IT is all I will say).
Staying in Geelong might be problematic as everyone wants to stay there, and Melbourne has more options as far as accommodation goes.
The site is so large it will take all 2 and a half days to get around everything, so plan accordingly. Most of the daytime flying schedule (especially the military flying) is repeated on other days so don't worry too much if you miss something.
And definitely visit Point Cook, it has an excellent collection of aircraft with some interesting stories behind them.

Agreed, went to the 03 show, found the time to get to Point Cook, and the Liberator restoration in Werribee.
Lots to see and do if you have the time, and the Friday night show is well worth it.
