Anybody know who was doing the aerobatic display over downtown Auckland about 5 minutes ago (08:35)?
A solo aircraft with smoke trail - a bit too far to make out and didn't get the binoculars in time.
Cheers, Stu.

Hey I saw that too.
Apparently it was a very good looking talented young pilot in a PURPLE Giles.
I believe that it was a display for his new sponsors “Mazda” (Zoom Zoom).
Was it any good?

He managed to get a live TV spot due TVNZ weather dude being on top of the TVNZ building. That'll teach me not to watch the telly The display looked pretty good from my vantage point although I missed the beginning as it took a minute or so for me to realise the engine note was different than the usual aircraft traffic and to drag myself away from my Weetbix. I also missed the end as I went in search of the binoculars. Cheers, Stu.

I'm intrigued. Was this a legal display? Otherwise my question is: how does one get permission to perform aerobatics over "downtown" (presume you mean the high city building) area of Auckland?

Whoops, a bit generic with my description. By downtown I mean over the harbour in front of the downtown area. Cheers, Stu.

Phew! OK now that seems a bit more reasonable. Forgot Auckland is the harbour city. Next question: Is this something that happens often and if so then it is apparently easy to get permission? Tah.

They have a number of harbour air displays each year Phil. Often the NZ Warbirds.

OK, so it must be an ideal venue / or well used so that it is not a big deal. I guess Sydney Harbour had a similar reputation until the Sea Venom crash in mid 1960s. While later - since the PC-9 Roulettes and all the new razzle dazzle events on the Harbour (new Years Fireworks one example) the harbour has become perhaps an aerial display venue again. But I don't live in the city to know one way or the other now.

I remember watching an airshow display by the previous owner. The current owner was providing the commentary and he stated, quite clearly, that the colour was LAVENDER.

Richard, it's great to hear that Mazda are sponsoring you and ZK-NUT.
Will their brandname and logo be added to the aircraft's colour scheme? And might we see NUT in one of their TV adverts or other advertising? Or are they just sponsoring air displays?
