Do any of the modellers here belong to IPMS , modelling clubs or groups ? I am involved with a small informal group who meet up at the Mount RSA monthly and we also have get togethers with a similar group from Hamilton .

Not any more. About ten years ago I was in an informal model club in Hamilton, we met once a month too just at people's homes and showed off latest models or kits. It was good fun and cost nothing. Before that when I was 17 I ran a successful scale model club here in Cambridge which was a branch of a hugely popular club Dad founded and was president of, Cambridge Amalgamated Radio Modellers. But the scale part came to an end when I joined the RNZAF, and Dad stepped down as President and his successors on committee ran the rest of the club into the ground.

IPMS Auckland member since mid-90s. Have held most positions on the committee at one time or another, and it's a very laid back club. Rivet counters tend to get the bum's rush and we like to think we are a pretty good bunch.
There are, and always will be, points of contention around contests (which is where people tend to label IPMS with the bad name), but that is the nature of the beast - people enter a contest expecting everyone to win and get disappointed when they don't. But it's not what IPMS is about. We are first and foremost here to promote the hobby. Auckland and Wellington clubs are pretty easy going (as are most clubs, but for whatever reason there seems to be more politics involved in clubs on the other side of the Strait).

Im a IMPS Wellington member. It's my second year with the club and I'm also on the clubs committee. Its a great way to meet fellow modellers in the area. I mainly got into it for the contests, so I can test and improve on my skills. Like Craig (talon) there can be some politics involved within the club. I am also very active member on ARC Forums - www.arcforums.com/forums/air/index.php. I started here when I got back into the hobby about 5 years ago. There is a lot of helpful and friendly people on the board, like here. I picked up lot of my skills here, watching and asking questions.

I'm in Levin and believe there are a few modellers local but no club as such, I'd love to join the Welli's boys but it's just not gonna happen. I do blog on ARC also though which is great help along with all here.

I think a club is a great way to learn new techniques from other modellers, and also a way to swap kits, etc. I guess in a way the internet has taken over some of the purposes of a club, I regularly look at Hyperscale and have picked up many techniques and tips from there. I like to think of this forum board as a nice infomal model club too really.
Is there an IPMS in Hamilton now? Someone told me there was but I've not come across it.
I wonder too, in the cities where there are IPMS clubs like Auckland, Wellington and Chch, are there also independant clubs thriving too? Or does IPMS always seem to become the dominant force and everyone joins it because it's a well known brandname?

We have a out-of-town membership. Maybe you want to join us?? You don't have to come to every meeting. Plus you can enter into the Club Comps... Have a think about it! We met at the Petone Working Mens club on the last Wednesday of each month around 7.30pm.

Dave that club you metioned in Hamilton is still going strong , we met up with some of them recently at Wayne Thomas's place at Papamoa , four or five from Hamilton and a similar number from the Bay of Plenty . A couple of us recently made a trip to Wellington and caught up with Torre and Rose Martin . Is Dave Stewart still involved in Auckland ?

Yes Dave , the same Wayne , sold the farm and moved to the edge of Hamilton and running his own business . Good to hear news of Dave Stewart I must get up to Auckland again and catch up with that crowd once more . I think it bodes well for the hobby that there are groups that have survived for years .

I'll be the slightly bewildered looking one, possibly wearing sports clothing (Wednesday is one of my Indoor sports nights). I was going to try the last one but got totally clashed.
